Essential Skills Curriculum

To get you started on integrating Essential Skills into your lesson plans, we’ve provided a number of teaching resources for your review, many currently used in the UA PIC BC training programs.

Following is a list of detailed lesson plans with Essential Skills integrated throughout the curriculum:

UA PIC BC ESP Curriculum 1

The memorandum linked here outlines curriculum choices, project resources, format, design and use of ESP activities description, along with the rationale for integrating lesson plans with Essential Skills.

Foundation Level 1 Schedule

Here is a proposed weekly schedule for the Foundation program, along with a daily detailed overview of the course content and training schedule.

Pre-Apprentice Courses

This is a contribution from the United Association local 463 with links to some of the course outlines for Pre-Apprentice and Apprenticeship courses. This will provide you with an understanding of the courses your students need in order to pursue apprenticeship.

Affirmative Action for Aboriginals

We have found through surveys of managers, employees, and program participants, there is a large gap in Aboriginal learning styles, which we are currently addressing through our Train the Trainer pilot program in aboriginal learning styles. Material can later be taught in a more visual manner geared towards the Aboriginal people.

ESP Skill Charts

The following are competency profile charts for plumbing, sprinklerfitting, steam/pipefitting, and welding. These skill charts, also called dakem charts, show you the skills and competencies required at each level of apprenticeship. As the level of study increases, so does the complexity of skills required to excel. See what Essential Skills a student will need to become a successful apprentice.

Other ESP Information

The EFF Handbook for Program Improvement, published by the Urban League and the National Institute for Literacy, addresses literacy concerns by clarifying goals, refining program components, and evaluating program data. This handbook explains how adult education helps diverse community members secure, and keep, better jobs for a better future.
